Spring Cleaning Checklist: Getting Your Home Ready for the New Season

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to refresh your home and start anew. A thorough spring cleaning doesn’t just make your home sparkle; it creates a sense of calm and satisfaction.
Whether you’re decluttering, deep cleaning, or making seasonal decor updates, we’ve got you covered with our step-by-step guide and handy checklist.
Let’s dive in and get your home spring-ready!

1. Declutter and Organise

The first step to a good spring clean is decluttering. It’s easy to accumulate lots of things you don’t need over the year; you’ll be surprised how much difference a good declutter can make.
Begin by evaluating each room and sorting items into three categories: "keep," "donate," and "discard." Be methodical and focus on one area at a time, such as shelves, drawers, or wardrobes and cupboards. Don’t forget to clear out storage areas such as cellars, garages and lofts too!
The goal is to create space and simplify your environment. If you’re having trouble throwing things away, ask yourself ‘have I used it in the past year?’ - if the answer is no, then it’s likely you don’t need it anymore.
Once you’ve organised your items into piles, try not to delay removing items to donate or throw away from your home. Keeping them in piles not only causes your home to look messy, but you might find yourself digging into old piles from time to time and re-cluttering your home.
Once decluttering is complete, consider how to organise your remaining belongings. If they already have their own place in your home, put them away. For items that don’t yet have their own space, consider using decorative trays for smaller items like keys, remotes, or office supplies.

Decorative trays are not only practical but also add a stylish touch to your decor. Place one on a coffee table, dressing table, or entryway table for a chic and functional display.Cute baskets are also great for grouping similar items together, making them easy to find while keeping your space tidy.

2. Deep Cleaning Essentials

Once you have decluttered, you’re in a much better position to deep clean your home, as you won’t have to move so many items around.
Deep cleaning goes beyond everyday tidying and focuses on those hidden and often-overlooked areas. A good method is the top-down approach; start from the top of a room and work your way down.
First tackle things such as ceiling lights and high shelves, before working your way to skirting boards and floors. Don’t forget to clean often-overlooked and hard to reach areas such as underneath furniture, vents and corners where dust tends to gather.
Windows are a priority during spring cleaning. As the season brings more and more natural light, you want to make sure your windows let in as much light as possible! Dirty windows = dull rooms.
Wash both the interior and exterior panes, using glass cleaner and microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine. To give your windows a style refresh for spring, you might also want to replace heavy curtains with lighter materials that reflect the season. If not replacing your curtains, you should wash curtains and blinds. The best way to do this is usually in the bath, hanging outside to dry.
For hard floors, mop with a cleaner that’s suitable for the material, and consider a deep clean for carpets and rugs using a steam cleaner.

3. Revitalise Your Kitchen and Dining Area

The kitchen is one of the most important areas to spring clean. One of the most frequently-used spaces, exposed to food, grease and high footfall, grime and dirt can build up over time, even if it looks clean to the naked eye.
You should start by emptying out your cupboards, drawers, and pantry if you have one. Wipe down all surfaces, including the inside of cabinets and drawers, using a gentle cleaner. Pay attention to sticky residue or spills in these often-neglected spaces.
Next, organise your cupboards and drawers using jars and baskets. For pantry staples such as pasta, rice and flour, you may want to use jars such as our bamboo storage jars, to avoid having open packets in your cupboards that can lead to spills. Storing pantry staples in jars can also help to keep them fresher for longer.

Use baskets to categorise snacks, baking supplies, or spices, and add labels, making it easier to find what you need…plus it looks great too!
Don’t overlook your appliances. Give your fridge a deep clean by removing all items, discarding out of date foods, and wiping down shelves and compartments. Run a cleaning cycle on your dishwasher, and degrease your oven and hob for a truly spotless kitchen. You may also want to use a washing machine cleaner and de-scale the kettle if you live in a hard water area.
Once your kitchen is nice and clean, ensure it continues to look pristine at meal times by replacing any plates, bowls or mugs that may be chipped, or no longer match your home's aesthetic. You might also want to upgrade chopping boards or serving trays that have begun to look tired.

4. Update Your Living Space

For most people, the living room is where you unwind after a long day. You want that space to feel as relaxing and as cosy as possible. Giving it some extra attention during your spring clean can help to do just that.
Begin by dusting all surfaces, including bookshelves, coffee tables, and any ornaments. When cleaning shelves and surfaces, make sure to remove each item first so you can clean properly.
Upholstery and soft furnishing can often go overlooked during a normal clean. During your spring clean, vacuum furniture thoroughly including the sofa and cushions, to remove hidden dirt and debris. If your cushions or sofa have removable covers, put these in the washing machine. For rugs, it’s often easiest to give them a good shake outside and wash according to the care instructions. For some rugs you will be able to use products such as rug shampoos, whilst others may need to be dry cleaned.
After cleaning, focus on creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Arrange scented candles on a tray or mantel for a warm, ambient glow, and add throw pillows or blankets in light, spring colours. You could also include personalised touches like ornaments or framed photos.

5. Refresh Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Once you’ve tackled the main living spaces, you can move onto the bedrooms and bathrooms.
In bedrooms, take the opportunity to wash all bedding, including duvets, pillows (if washable) and less-washed items such as mattress covers and throws. You may want to put winter bedding into storage after washing, and replace with lighter duvets and covers, designed for warmer temperatures. Cotton and linen are great choices for spring duvet covers.
Make sure any bedside tables have been decluttered and have everything you need for a relaxing evening; a lamp, a book, perhaps a candle or diffuser with a relaxing scent such as our Hibernate diffuser oil.
In the bathroom, focus on jobs that you don’t do every week such as scrubbing grout and removing any mould or limescale. As usual when cleaning your bathroom, you should then also give any tiles a good scrub, along with the sink, bath/shower, toilet and mirrors.
Clean out any bathroom cabinets or drawers, wipe inside and only replace useful items, discarding any out of date products. Taking inspiration from your kitchen, you might want to organise bathroom products using baskets or trays to keep everything neat and tidy moving forward.
For products that you use frequently, such as skincare items, you could use a decorative tray that can be left out without looking messy.
Just like the bedroom, the bathroom is also the perfect place for a scented candle or diffuser, allowing you to unwind and de-stress when needed.
