3 wick candles are the ones that make a whole room smell of autumn rather than just the corner they sit in. Three flames melt the wax evenly, throw more scent and fill a living room in minutes, which is why a single 3 wick candle on the coffee table does what two or three small candles cannot.
We make six 3 wick scented candles, all 400g, all 100% natural wax with a 12% fragrance blend, and all around 40 to 50 hours of burn time. This guide explains what a 3 wick candle does differently, how to burn one so it lasts, where to put it, and which of the six scents suits the season.
What is a 3 wick candle?
A 3 wick candle is a wide candle with three wicks set in a triangle rather than one in the middle. The width is the point: a single wick can only melt wax so far from the flame, so a wide candle with one wick burns a hole down the centre and leaves the sides untouched. Three wicks share the job, and the whole surface melts together.
That is the difference between a candle that smells of something and one that fills the room. You will see them written as 3 wick candles or three wick candles; they are the same thing.
Why 3 wick candles burn better
An even melt pool, no tunnelling
Tunnelling is what happens when a candle burns down the middle and leaves a wall of wax around the edge. It wastes wax, buries the wicks and cuts the scent. A three wick candle melts edge to edge on every burn, so there is no wall to form.
More scent in a bigger room
Scent comes off the surface of the melted wax, so a wider melt pool gives off more fragrance. Our 3 wick candles carry a 12% fragrance blend, which is high for a natural wax candle, and three wicks put all of it to work. In a living room, open-plan kitchen or hallway, that is the difference you notice.
Faster to fill a room
Three flames reach a full melt pool in a fraction of the time one does. Light a 3 wick candle when you get in, and by the time the kettle has boiled the room has changed.
Our 3 wick scented candles
Every one of our 3 wick candles is the same size and wax; only the scent changes.
Cosy: the autumn candle
Scented Candle – Cosy is pumpkin, vanilla and nutmeg, which is autumn in a jar without being a pumpkin spice cliché. It is the one to light from the first cold evening in September and it carries on into December. £28.95.
Hibernate: the winter candle
Scented Candle – Hibernate is pine needles, smoky wood and cedar. It is darker and woodier than Cosy, so it suits late autumn, Bonfire Night and the run-up to Christmas. £28.95.
The other four
For spring and summer, or for anyone who finds autumn scents heavy, the range has four lighter candles at the same price: Scented Candle – Happy (rosemary, patchouli and sea salt), Scented Candle – Sunshine (gardenia, sweet pea and white cedar wood), Scented Candle – Bloom (citrus, jasmine and rose) and Scented Candle – Blossom (lemon, jasmine and amber). Happy is the one to keep in the kitchen all year.
Our scented candles guide matches each scent to a room if you are choosing for the whole house.
How to burn a 3 wick candle properly
A 3 wick candle only burns better if you burn it right. Six rules, all from the label:
- Light all three wicks every time. Lighting one to make it last longer does the opposite: it tunnels, and you lose the wax around the other two.
- Let the first burn reach the edge. The first time you light it, leave it until the melted wax touches the sides of the jar. That sets the memory of the candle, and every burn after will melt to the edge too.
- Burn for two to four hours. Less than two and the pool does not reach the edge; more than four and the wicks get long and smoky.
- Trim the wicks to 5mm before each burn. Pinch the burnt tip off with your fingers once the wax is cold, or use scissors. Long wicks are where the black smoke comes from.
- Stop at 10mm of wax. Burning to the bottom overheats the jar.
- Keep it 15cm from other candles and out of draughts, which pull the flames sideways and melt one side faster than the other.
Never leave it burning when you leave the room, and keep it where children and pets cannot reach.
Where to put a 3 wick candle
Somewhere flat, heat-proof and in the middle of the room, because the scent spreads from where the candle sits. A coffee table is the obvious place; a dining table during the meal and a hall table in the evening both work.
Always put it on something. The Ruffled Candle Plate is 15cm across and made to sit under a candle, catching drips and lifting the jar off a wooden surface. On a tray, the Scalloped Natural Display Board gives a 3 wick candle a base with room for a small pumpkin or a sprig beside it. Our candle tray ideas post has more.
Two places to avoid: directly under a shelf or cupboard, where three flames put a lot of heat into the wood above, and next to dried stems, faux foliage or curtains.
How long does a 3 wick candle last?
Our 3 wick candles burn for around 40 to 50 hours. At three hours an evening, that is two to two and a half weeks of use, so two Cosy candles see you through October. The 400g of wax is the same across all six scents, so the burn time does not change with the fragrance.
If you want a candle to last longer, the answer is shorter burns done properly, not fewer wicks: a three-hour burn to the edge every evening uses less wax than a tunnelled candle that never melts out.
3 wick candle or tea lights?
They do different jobs. A 3 wick candle is one strong source of scent and a steady pool of light for the centre of a room. Tea lights are small points of light for trays, tables and windowsills, with almost no scent. On an autumn evening, the usual answer is one 3 wick candle on the coffee table for the fragrance and three tea light holders somewhere else for the glow. Our pumpkin tea light holders guide covers the tea light side.
Natural wax candles: what the label means
Our 3 wick candles are 100% natural wax rather than paraffin. Natural wax burns cooler and more slowly, which is part of why a 400g candle gives 40 to 50 hours, and with trimmed wicks it burns cleanly without the black soot a paraffin candle can leave on the jar and the ceiling. The 12% fragrance blend is the amount of scent oil in the wax; it is at the high end for natural wax candles, which is why the scent is strong without needing a bigger candle.
3 wick candles as gifts
A 3 wick candle is a gift that does not need explaining. The Cosy & Hibernate Candle Duo Gift Set puts the autumn and winter scents together in a gift bag, so the person you give it to has one candle for October and November and one for December. For why candles are worth having in the house at all, our older post 5 Reasons You Need Candles in Your Home still holds.
Final thoughts
Buy one 3 wick candle, light all three wicks, let the first burn reach the edge, trim the wicks and put it on a plate in the middle of the room. Do that and a 400g candle will smell of autumn every evening for the best part of a fortnight. Start with Cosy; move on to Hibernate when the clocks go back.

FAQs
What is a 3 wick candle?
A 3 wick candle is a wide candle with three wicks arranged in a triangle. The three flames melt the whole surface of the wax evenly, which stops tunnelling and releases more scent than a single wick in a candle the same size.
Are 3 wick candles better than single wick candles?
For a living room or open-plan space, yes. They melt evenly, fill a bigger room with scent and reach a full melt pool faster. A single wick candle suits a small room, a bedside table or a bathroom.
Do you have to light all three wicks?
Yes, every time. Lighting one or two makes the candle tunnel around the unlit wicks and wastes the wax. Three wicks lit together is what keeps the surface level.
How long should you burn a 3 wick candle?
Between two and four hours at a time. The first burn should last until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar. Stop using the candle when 10mm of wax is left.
How do I stop a 3 wick candle smoking?
Trim all three wicks to 5mm before each burn, keep the candle out of draughts and do not burn it for more than four hours. Smoke almost always means a long wick.
How long do your 3 wick candles last?
Around 40 to 50 hours. Each candle is 400g of 100% natural wax, so at three hours an evening one candle lasts two to two and a half weeks.
Which 3 wick candle is best for autumn?
Cosy, which is pumpkin, vanilla and nutmeg. Hibernate, with pine, smoky wood and cedar, is the one for late autumn and winter.
What should a 3 wick candle sit on?
A heat-proof plate or tray, never straight on wood. A candle plate catches drips and lifts the jar off the surface, and a tray lets you move the candle without touching the hot jar.
Are natural wax candles better than paraffin?
Natural wax burns cooler, slower and cleaner, so a candle lasts longer and leaves less soot. Ours are 100% natural wax with a 12% fragrance blend.
