5 Easy Ways to Transition Your Decor from Summer to Autumn

Yes, autumn doesn’t officially begin until late September, but the instore fashion and homeware collections are already out.

Summer decor is about light and freshness. But as the cooler days roll in, you’ll want to cosy things up and create ambience.

But how can you subtly move between the seasons without an entire overhaul of your interior?

(For specific seasonal pieces for your home, we recommend preordering from now. At Pretty Little Home, we have a number of popular, autumn-themed homewares that often sell out  – such as our pumpkin mugs. As such, we’re offering discounts on our autumn homeware with preorders.)

From pumpkin mugs to pinecones, here are five ways to easily make the shift to autumn:

  1. Add subtle, seasonal hints

If you’re not a fan of big statements, you can acknowledge the changing of the season with small additions across the home.

Kitchenware is a great place to start and this wouldn’t be an autumn-themed article if we didn’t mention our ever-popular pumpkin mugs

Whether you slot them into your cute mug collection or replace all your mugs for the season, pumpkin mugs are a great way to herald autumn! These decorative mugs are elegant and unique without being gaudy or too loud.

Opt for other ornamental pumpkins elsewhere. Our beautiful set of small, black resin pumpkins whisper autumn, instead of shouting it. Display them in a glass bowl or dot them across the mantelpiece.

2.Decorate with white

Yes, white might not be the first colour that springs to mind when you think of autumn – but hear us out. A neutral colour scheme helps you transition between summer and autumn because it works as a great backdrop for seasonal accents.

Add splashes of colour here and there with vivid autumnal plants or bold, statement pieces – such as our pink ceramic pumpkins.

If yours is already a vibrant colour scheme, use white or neutral colours in your decorations. We recommend white fluffy throws, neutral cushions or kitchenware in muted, natural tones

3.Add texture with different blankets

Blankets and throws in different textures help cosy up a room (as well as being excellent practical additions). For creating a fabulously shabby chic living space, the more textures and the more mismatched, the better. (Although this works best with an already-neutral colour scheme – see first point.)

Place a blanket at the end of the bed to guard against the chill. Bed blankets are especially useful in the transition between seasons when the weather doesn’t quite justify your higher-tog duvet.

4.Use soft lighting

As the evenings draw in, create a snug ambience with soft, mood lighting. Our autumn candle set helps create a sense of calm and brings a sense of autumn magic to any room.

Use tealights in mason jars or in our round glass tealight holder. Alternatively, fill one with pine cones or other such autumnal objects (see next point) for a sumptuously seasonal centrepiece.

5.Embrace the natural elements of autumn

The leaves outside may be falling but there’s still an abundance of natural objects (including seasonal plants) to be celebrated in autumn.

Pinecones, acorns, pumpkins and decorative sprigs all scream autumn and transform your home into a rustic wonderland. (It’s also a sustainable and cheap way to decorate as you can simply collect fallen objects from outside.)
