Beat the January Blues with These Interior Design Tips

The dreaded Blue Monday is on the horizon… If you’ve not heard of it, it is known for being the most depressing day of the year. Typically, Blue Monday is the third Monday in January – the point at which seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is at its peak and most of us have failed in our new year’s resolutions.

Great!

But don’t despair, we’re here to show you how to survive January. And it all starts with your home.

  1. Embrace mugs

Did you know that drinking warm drinks can help cheer you up? In the misery of chilly January, a warm mug of something is a huge comfort.

In the UK especially, it seems drinking tea or coffee in the morning is as ritualistic and necessary as brushing our teeth.

So if this is the case, we should make sure we’re drinking from the best vessel! Pretty Little Home’s extensive mug collection features unique and beautiful ceramic designs as well as sleek glass mugs.

Not a caffeine lover? Slurp hot chocolates, herbal teas or veggie soups instead. How about a delicious buttery pumpkin soup in one of our cute pumpkin mugs?

  1. Bring the outdoors in

Bringing plants and flowers into your living space improves both psychological and physical wellbeing. They increase productivity, improve attention span and reduce stress as well as helping to reduce blood pressure and fatigue.

Connect your interior to the outside world with houseplants, sprays or bouquets of flowers.

Oh, and they don’t have to be real either. Artificial foliage has been shown to boost mental health too

We’re already big fans of faux stems – but if you were in any doubt, here are some more reasons to go faux.

  1. Fill the air with fragrance

Aromatherapy is the ancient practice of using fragrant essential oils to support health and wellbeing. These oils can be used as remedies for various health issues such as stress, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Scented candles, oil burners and room diffusers all use essential oils and contribute towards a healthier, happier home.

  1. Get cosy

The winter solstice may be behind us, but balmy summer days are still a long way off. Keeping warm inside your home is imperative for your mental as well as physical health. A cold home is a miserable home.

Finding ways to keep warm naturally (i.e. without relying on that boiler) is a top priority in the current economic crisis.

Keep a range of throws and blankets on the arms of sofas or backs of chairs for wrapping up when you need. For under-foot comfort and warmth, use textured rugs on the floor. And for insulation, invest in draft-stopper cushions for doors and windows.

  1. Think about lighting

We all know that the blue phone light is the devil. Responsible for poor sleep patterns, they can also induce stress when used at night.

It’s the same with harsh, white interior lighting. Switch to soft lighting with warm bulbs and opt for lamps – instead of overhead lighting – which direct light better.
